Norvell Township is located in Jackson County, Michigan. Downtown Norvell consists of a store, cemetery and also a church. The township was named after John Norvell, one of Michigan's first U.S. Senators. The Village of Brooklyn is to the west, and the Brooklyn post office with zip code 49230 also serves most of southern Norvell Township. The Village of Grass Lake is to the north, and the Grass Lake post office with zip code 49240 also serves portions of northern Norvell Township.
In 1831 William Hunt, the first white settler in the area, arrived in Norvell Township. A post office was established on March 17, 1838. Harvey Austin was the first postmaster. It was a station on Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway in 1878.
According to the United States Census Bureau, Norvell Township has a total area of 32.0 square miles, of which, 30.0 square miles of it is land and 2.0 square miles of it (6.37%) is water. Coordinates: 42° 8′ 0″ N, 84° 10′ 0″ W
There are several lakes in Norvell Township including Mud Lake, Bessey Lake, Norvell Lake,
Sweezey Lake, Tamarack Lake, Tucker Lake, Wamplers Lake, Watkins Lake.
Norvell Senior Center
The Norvell Senior Center meets Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 10am-1pm. A hot meal is served at noon, but you may come early for activities and programs. You must sign-up either at the Norvell Senior Center (106 E. Commercial Norvell MI 49263), or by calling (517) 768-8684 one day in advance to make your meal reservations. Announcements start 5 minutes before noon and many days coffee is served during this time.
Suggested donation for guests who are 60
years and older: $2.50.
Cost for guest who are under 60 years is $3.50.
